Jess Bates

Researcher, Tanzania

Jess works part-time with the MAEASaM team based in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York. She holds a BA in Archaeology and a PhD from the University of York, and an MPhil in Archaeological Science from the University of Cambridge.
Jess specialises in European Prehistory, with a particular focus on hunter-gatherer settlements and structures. For her doctoral research, she applied a range of different methods, from microscopic analysis of flint tools to spatial mapping to explore how the material culture of Mesolithic societies can reveal insights into daily life. From her background in GIS, developed through her postgraduate and doctoral studies, Jess is assisting with mapping legacy data and creating remote sensing data for Tanzania.

I am really passionate about communicating research with different audiences, and a key tool for that is through the use of visual data such as maps. It is great to have an opportunity to work in a new geographical area and with more contemporary archaeological sites to see the wealth of data that can be gained through digital methods of analysis.

In her spare time, Jess likes to be outdoors, whether that’s walking her dog or running.
