Elias Michaut

Postgraduate Researcher

Elias is a member of the MAEASaM team at the University of Cambridge and holds a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and a MPhil in Archaeological Research, both from the University of Cambridge.

Elias is passionate about historical archaeology, and the combined use of archaeological fieldwork, archives, and digital methods to study the past. Their MPhil research focused on the archaeology of emancipation, colonial discipline, and gender in north-western Senegal. They have a particular interest in the intersections between critical theory and digital methods applied to archaeology.

Between their BA and master’s degrees, Elias worked with the British Institute in Eastern Africa as a graduate attaché on various projects (including the MAEASaM and LandCover6k projects). They now work both as a research assistant for the MAEASaM project and as a field archaeologist at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit.

I’m passionate about the use of innovative, interdisciplinary, and digital methods in archaeology, and how they change the way we comprehend and approach archaeological data.

Outside of work, Elias really enjoys photography, cooking, and reading Wikipedia for hours.
