John Lavender

Researcher, Tanzania

John is a member of the MAEASaM team at the University of York. His professional background is in aerial remote sensing and the application of GIS and digital recording within commercial archaeology. Through his work with aerial imaging and LiDAR for site detection, John has contributed to projects in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He holds a BA in Historical Archaeology from the University of York and is interested in aerial and landscape archaeology and bringing archaeological recording into the digital age.

Maps and aerial images can be such an accessible way to document and communicate about archaeology. I am still fascinated by how people have distributed themselves and their activities across different landscapes and it continues to surprise me how groups that seem so remote are often deeply connected within regional and global systems.

In his spare time John enjoys both codes of rugby and traditional folk music.
