Co-investigator for Zimbabwe
Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology and GIS at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University. He studied for his PhD in Uppsala and has two master’s degrees, one in archaeology and the other in landscape archaeology from Leicester University. While studying at Leicester (1999-2000), Daniel took a GIS course. Although short, it meant that when he returned to Sweden he knew more about GIS than most Swedish archaeologists at the time. When he started his PhD, he soon became involved in teaching GIS and has never looked back.
I’m particularly interested in the use of large data sets and how these can transform the way we do research. When we start to aggregate data from archaeological investigations and scientific analysis, we can say more about large-scale changes in society and the living conditions of ordinary people who may not have left any spectacular finds or monuments behind. I’m always on the lookout for new skills in using digital technology for research. From Coursera and Udemy to YouTube, there’s an ocean of resources out there for learning online.
Daniel is one of the founders of Disir Productions, a small company working with 3D visualisations of cultural heritage that has made mobile apps for visualisation, VR for museums and animations of historic environments. As part of this work, he greatly enjoys collaborating with professional game designers and researchers to try to recreate authentic environments.
Daniel impressively has a light aircraft pilot licence and enjoys flying in his spare time.
